A Rocha is an international network of environmental organizations with a Christian ethos. A Rocha, which means "the rock" in Portuguese, was founded in Portugal in 1983.
Since the early 2010s, A Rocha Manitoba, the provincial chapter of A Rocha Canada, has been developing the Boreal Ecology Centre in Braintree, MB as a location for nature science, spiritual and wellness retreats, and theological and ecological location around people and places.
I was asked to develop a trails map for the location from GIS and satellite data, trails information, and a concept sketch created by A Rocha's director, Scott Gerbrandt.
A Rocha Manitoba has no prior design precedents for onsite signage or wayfinding, so I suggested we work from the cartographic style of A Rocha British Columbia's Brooksdale Centre, making tweaks to typography and colours based on A Rocha's newly updated (2019) branding.
The final map was built up from scratch in layers over top of the GIS SVG data and features a few additional informational elements, like more natural features, trail length distance, and estimated times for roundtrip hikes.
Three versions of the map were created - a preformatted 8.5"x11," a 9"x12" that would allow custom cropping for 8.5x11 applications, and a 24"x36" to be used on-site.
