Walk for Common Ground

Mennonite Church Canada Indigenous Relations

2019

About the Walk

"The Walk for Common Ground" was an initiative of Indigenous Elders, public health care union workers, representatives of faith communities, and others that departed from Edmonton, Alberta in Treaty 6 Territory with the goal  of making it to Calgary, Alberta in Treaty 7 Territory in 14 days. Through learning and living into the natural laws of kindness, honesty, sharing, and strength, they all walked to transform themselves and the communities they visit along the way, raising awareness of health conditions in Indigenous communities and highlighting the shared work of reconciliation that faces all communities in Canada.

You can read about the walk on CBC, CJWE, APTN, and the National Union of Public and General Employees.

My role

I was hired by Mennonite Church Canada director Steve Heinrichs to quickly create a series of graphical tools and materials, as well as quickly find a way to source and print all of these materials in a short time.

Building Graphics

Working with existing material

The group had already created a banner graphic, but it needed to be turned into a full suite of visuals to be used in various contexts.

Injecting typography

Going further, I chose Atipo Foundry's Knile as the primary slab, bringing on board as well their Geomanist sans. While they are not free typefaces, they are both highly affordable.

From this look I created a wide variety of graphics that were used both by walkers taking part as well as partners helping with promotion.

End Users

I also created a series of triflold brochures and edittable template posters for partners to use to promote the walk in their communities across the country.

Caught on Tape

Rebel Sky Media also produced a documentary that covers the entire Walk for Common Ground, and you can spot the materials and flag in use in the video.
